Current mood: okay

God and wine -- a winning combination
Ah, sadness. I've befriended two of the bartenders working at the hotel we're staying at, but neither was on duty today, so the drinks just weren't as good :(.

When not drinking (in moderation), I've been sneaking into a church conference. Okay, no judging me on the moral ramifications of my current lifestyle ;P;P;P. Anyway, it's going surprisingly well. I really do like my denomination and particularly my congregation, but I've been steeling myself for some of the issues these past few weeks. And while I can't say I'm entirely happy how things are working out, I'm just here for the fun stuff -- my mom has to deal with the political crap ^^;;.

Anyway, one more day then we head out, at which point I'll be sans Internet until Austin. Gotta download some Siggraph papers, so I'll have something to present in a couple weeks for the graphics group o.@;;.

Are you a Christian? No problems there, Jesus loved wine after all ;D

Well, I try to be, but I wouldn't be so presumptuous to say I succeed >_>. In any case, I am ethnic Mennonite, for whatever that counts ^^;;.

And shit yeah! Jesus knew how to party! Too bad those Puritans ruined it for the rest of America XDXDXD.

That's cool. Where we used to live in Lancaster there were a lot of Mennonites always confusing the tourists ("Why is that Amish guy playing the arcade machines?")

I always get confused when Christians tell me they don't drink at all because they're Christian. I'm like uh, have you read the Bible? Jesus makes wine out of water, not the other way around XD

About "trying to be" - I have heard a few "Christians" refer to themselves as Christ-followers instead, because they thought the term "Christian" was too presumptuous. One of my favorite local religious people is like that - he gave away all his belongings and lives with the homeless and helps them, trying to live his life like Jesus. I have to say, he walks the walk instead of just talking the talk and that's cool with me.

Yeah, I've heard all sorts of interesting excuses -- the water was bad so he had to make wine, it was actually grape juice. My ancestors came pretty late on to America, so they missed that whole "having fun is a sin" thing, which I'm grateful for ^^;;.

Although I don't feel called to do that at the moment, I did talk to several people from an intentional community, whom I enjoyed, and hearing Shane Claiborne is very interesting.

I personally still wrestle with the notion of individuality and ego, so me giving up my worldly possessions and living as Christ lived/meditating on a mountain will have to wait ^^;;.
